Alfred Arnell (b.1856)

Alfred Arnell was born in 1856 in Scarborough. In 1880 he was working as a photographer “on the sands” at Bridlington when he was assaulted by another photographer William Garner who accused him of tampering with the “bath he used for likenesses”. Garner was fined 2s 6d and costs of 21s. He was lodging in Baxtergate, Whitby in 1881 when he gave his profession as ‘photographer.’ He was still living in Whitby in 1885-6, but by 1891 he was living in Heckington, near Sleaford in Lincolnshire with his wife and child and working as a photographer.

He appears to have been married to Elizabeth, with whom he had two children Mary Watson and Henry all of whom can be found on monuments in Dean Road Cemetery, Scarborough.
