Alice Brigham (1862-1952)

Alice Kellaway was the daughter of Frank (b.1835, Freshwater, Isle of Wight), a master mariner and his wife Caroline (b.1840, Ryde, Isle of Wight), born in Yarmouth, Isle of Wight in 1862. in the 1881 census she was recorded as a photographic apprentice living in Clarence Road, Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Alice was probably related to the photographer James Kellaway who had a studio at Yarmouth Road, East Cowes. At some point after the 1881 census she joined by the studio of William Dodson Brigham. When William Foster Brigham is born on 10 September 1884 his birth certificate records Alice Kellaway as the mother. Arthur Peter Donald Brigham was born on 16 March 1888, Alice was again recorded as the mother. The 1891 census shows Alice living with William and the two children, but listed as a boarder. Mary, William’s first wife was living in her home town in Staffordshire when she died in 1902. William finally married Alice in 1903. Following William’s death in 1909 Alice takes over the business. Her son William Foster Brigham also becomes a photographer, sometimes working with her on the Esplanade before setting up his studio in Bridlington.

Alice was buried in Manor Road Cemetery in the same grave as her husband, William Dodson Brigham, and her second son Arthur Peter Donald Brigham (1888-1964) following her death on 25 January 1952.
